How are freshwater pearls formed?
Freshwater pearls are one of nature's most remarkable symbols. As their name suggests, they are formed in freshwater mussels, found in rivers and lakes. But how do pearls form? Pearls are formed when the mussel's body reacts to a foreign object, such as a grain of sand, a piece of shell, or any other particle or element that enters the shell. In response to this foreign object, the mussel produces a special substance called nacre (mother of pearl). The nacre deposits on the intruder, creating successive layers that, over time, transform into a pearl. The length of the pearl formation process depends on many factors, such as the type of mussel, its age, and the quality of the water in which it lives.
What is the history of natural pearl cultivation?
For centuries, pearls have been considered a treasure and a symbol of wealth. Historically, they were very difficult to obtain, making them an object of desire for many, available only to the highest echelons of society. This status was changed by Kokichi Mikimoto, a Japanese pearl breeder. He began his efforts in the 19th century. Mikimoto believed that pearls should be available to a wider audience and focused his efforts on thoroughly understanding the pearl formation process and streamlining it for breeding purposes. He also believed that a pearl's quality is achieved when it acquires its ideal shape and color, so he strived to achieve the highest possible quality in the pearl formation process. His beginnings were very difficult, with him losing farm after farm for various reasons. However, after many years of work, Mikimoto perfected his system and began producing perfect pearls naturally, but in the farms he established. Initially, he faced negative reactions from Western societies. However, Mikimoto was so determined that through his contacts and specific behavior (such as setting a mountain of pearls on fire in front of many people, shouting that they were "imperfect"), they gained popularity for themselves and their pearls. It must be admitted that by improving the pearl-making process, Mikimoto not only had an impact on increasing the availability of high-quality pearls to other sectors of society, but also on lowering their price and, most importantly, on reducing the pressure on the destruction of the natural habitats of freshwater and saltwater mollusks. in search of pearls. Nowadays, there are many freshwater and saltwater cultured pearls that form naturally. Pearls that are completely formed in their natural environment (not cultured) are also available, but their prices are so high that they dominate many jewelry and gemstone auctions worldwide.
